Netflix recently announced the upcoming release of Bird Box Barcelona, a movie set in the same apocalyptic horror world as their previous hit, Bird Box. Based on Josh Malerman’s novel, Bird Box Barcelona‘s cast has been announced (below) and it will debut on July 14th. As the release date draws near, a teaser trailer for the film has been unveiled online.
Included in the cast: Georgina Campbell from the Barbarian, along with Mario Casas, Alejandra Howard, Naila Schuberth, Diego Calva, Patrick Criado, Lola Dueñas, Gonzalo De Castro, Michelle Jenner, and Leonardo Sbaraglia. Alex and David Pastor have written and directed the film, which expands on the captivating story that captured audiences’ attention in 2018.
In Bird Box Barcelona, the cast faces a world in which the population is devastated by a mysterious force, and Sebastian embarks on a perilous journey through the deserted streets of Barcelona, forming uneasy alliances with other survivors. However, they soon realize that an unexpected and even more sinister threat is emerging as they try to escape the city.
Author Josh Malerman produced Bird Box Barcelona with Dylan Clark, Chris Morgan, Núria Valls, Adrián Guerra, and Ryan Lewis. Ainsley Davies and Brian Williams serve as executive producers.
In regards to the timeline and how the events and this cast of Bird Box Barcelona fits into it all, Clark told Entertainment Weekly: “The events that we see Malorie/Sandra Bullock endure in the original Bird Box are happening at the same time that Sebastian/Mario Casas is going through his journey. Being in Barcelona gave us a chance to see how surviving this intense threat in an iconic city poses different challenges.”
Morgan also said: “Malorie’s journey was just the first chapter of this global, apocalyptic event,” adds producer Chris Morgan. As we were developing the original film, we often discussed what would be happening at the same time in different countries around the world. During this extinction-level event for humanity, how would families in Europe, Asia, Africa respond to the mysterious creatures’ sudden appearance around the globe? What unique challenges would people face based on their geography, culture, their politics? Bird Box Barcelona gives us the opportunity to expand and explore the mystery further.”
